Which metrics answer a real business question?

Quick test: Pick one number on your dashboard. Say what you would do if it doubled and what if it halved. If nothing changes, drop it.

Useful crypto marketing metrics help you decide what to do next. Before opening a dashboard, write down the decision you need to make: whether a campaign brought relevant holders, whether new users returned, or whether acquisition cost makes sense for the product's current stage. A metric without a decision attached can become noise.

Connect each activity to a practical question. A visibility placement may call for referral visits and subsequent product actions; a community program may call for returning participants and support questions; a launch campaign may call for wallet activity and retention after the initial attention fades. Keep the chain of evidence visible instead of presenting each channel's numbers in isolation.

A simple working sequence is:

  • Record the baseline and the dates of planned activity.
  • Tag links and campaign sources consistently.
  • Compare the same audience or cohort over time.
  • Note what changed, what did not, and what you will test next.

At MarketingExtra, we begin by checking that campaign dates, source tags and on-chain observations refer to the same period. That reconciliation makes the summary more useful than a dashboard full of disconnected totals.

What a holder count tells you

A holder count tells you how many addresses a data source associates with a token balance; it does not tell you how many distinct people care about the project. One person can control several addresses, and an address can represent a service or shared wallet. Treat the count as a distribution signal to investigate, not a direct measure of community size.

Read holder movement alongside context you can inspect: the time window, balances by address, transfers, known treasury or liquidity addresses, and whether new wallets later interact with the product or community. Keep your inclusion rules consistent from one report to the next. If you change how you classify project-controlled addresses, mark the change so it does not look like organic movement.

A useful holder review asks:

  • Did the count change during a specific campaign window?
  • Are changes spread across addresses or concentrated in a small number?
  • Do new addresses show activity beyond receiving tokens?
  • Can you explain exclusions, migrations or known team wallets?

For campaign planning, compare holder movement with the channel that introduced the project. A holder increase without attributable visits or meaningful follow-up is a prompt to investigate the source, not a reason by itself to scale that channel.

Judging the quality of trading volume

Volume quality is a judgement about whether observed trading activity is relevant and interpretable for your project, not a standalone score. Review volume together with liquidity, transaction size distribution, wallet activity and the time period. That context helps you distinguish a broad change in market participation from activity concentrated in a few addresses or a short-lived event.

Use data you can verify in the relevant explorer or market interface. Record the pair and venue, the observation window, and any known token migration or liquidity change. Look for patterns rather than relying on one aggregate number: whether activity persists across the period, whether liquidity is available for the observed trades, and whether the same addresses appear repeatedly. These checks are descriptive; they do not prove a trader's intent.

When reviewing campaign impact, annotate external factors such as a listing announcement or product release. Then compare activity before, during and after the campaign using the same source and time windows. Do not attribute every market movement to marketing simply because it happened at the same time.

If market visibility is a campaign objective, set a reporting format in advance: source, pair, observation time, liquidity context and notable changes. For platform-specific discovery mechanics, see our guides to DEXScreener trending and DEXTools trending.

Your 7-point scorecard checklist

Build the scorecard in one sitting with these 7 steps. A one-page sheet with definitions beats a large dashboard that nobody trusts. Keep the ticked list with your records, because it is the quickest way to explain later what was agreed.

  • Write the one goal for the next 30 days.
  • Choose 5 metrics that show progress toward it.
  • Define each metric in one sentence.
  • Name an owner for each.
  • Set a review day every 14 days.
  • Note what you would change if it moves.
  • Keep a dated copy of each review.

Terms in one line

CAC (in plain words: customer acquisition cost, what you spend to gain one active user).

Retention means the share of users who come back after their first visit.

How to measure retention

Retention measures whether people who first used or joined a project return within a defined period. It answers a different question from reach: did the experience give someone a reason to come back? Decide what “active” means for your product before comparing cohorts. A return visit, a completed transaction, a governance action and a community contribution are not interchangeable events.

Group users by a meaningful first interaction, such as signup week, first product use or campaign source. Apply the same definition of activity and observation window to each group. For a wallet-based product, be clear about whether your view follows addresses or verified user accounts; addresses are not a dependable proxy for people. For a community, define a useful return action rather than counting every message as lasting participation.

A retention review can include:

  • The first meaningful action and the date it occurred.
  • The return action that qualifies as active use.
  • The cohort or source used for comparison.
  • Reasons for missing or incomplete data.

If a campaign attracts attention but its cohort rarely returns, examine onboarding, product fit and the promise made in the campaign before increasing reach. Our Telegram community growth guide covers how to connect channel activity to sustained participation.

Working out CAC for a crypto campaign

Rule of thumb: Five metrics, each with an owner and a definition. More than that and nobody reads the report.

Customer acquisition cost, or CAC, is attributable acquisition spend divided by the number of customers acquired from that spend. Define “customer” for your business first: it might mean a paying user, an activated subscriber or another completed commercial action. Token holders, social followers and website visitors are not automatically customers.

Include the costs that belong to the acquisition effort, such as media, creator fees and campaign production, and state what you have included. Use tagged links, referral codes or a documented attribution rule to connect an acquisition to its source. If a person encounters several channels before converting, report the attribution model rather than presenting one channel's credit as certain.

For a decision-ready comparison, keep the plan consistent:

  • Match spend and acquired customers to the same campaign period.
  • Separate first-time customers from returning customers.
  • Note delayed conversions and incomplete source data.
  • Compare CAC with the product's own revenue or value model.

A lower CAC is not automatically better if the acquired audience does not retain or use the product. Pair acquisition cost with cohort quality, and be explicit when attribution is incomplete. To plan campaign inputs, see the crypto marketing budget guide; for creator sourcing and measurement, use the KOL campaign guide.

What belongs on a marketing scorecard

A useful scorecard keeps a small set of decision-linked measures together with their definitions and sources. It should let a teammate understand what changed without having to guess whether the reporting method changed too. Choose measures that fit the current objective; a product launch, a community program and a retention effort do not need identical dashboards.

A practical scorecard can include these fields:

Field What to record
Objective The business decision the activity supports
Source Channel, campaign link or on-chain data source
Measure Holder movement, qualified activity, retention or CAC
Definition Inclusion rule, cohort and observation window
Context Product changes, listings or other concurrent events
Next action Continue, investigate, adjust or stop

Keep raw observations separate from interpretation. For example, record a wallet count as an observation and explain separately why you believe it relates to a campaign. Add a note when a source changes its display, a token migrates, or tracking is interrupted. A stable definition is what makes a comparison useful, not a polished chart.

Use the scorecard in a recurring team review. Ask whether the evidence supports the original objective, what remains uncertain, and what single change would make the next test easier to interpret.

Where metrics reach their limits

Crypto marketing metrics are evidence for decisions, not proof that one campaign caused every observed change. Public wallet data can show address activity, but it cannot reliably identify every person, explain intent or reveal activity outside the data source. Attribution also becomes less certain when a user encounters several channels or tracking is incomplete.

Market interfaces may display different information or change how they present it, while a project cannot control their review decisions, ranking or rotation. No reporting method can promise that a platform will feature a token or that a particular market signal will follow a campaign. Our job is to document agreed work and present the evidence and its limits clearly.

Make the next measurement stronger by sharing your objective, campaign dates, links and the definition of a valuable user. If you are preparing a launch, use the token launch marketing checklist to align the measurement plan with campaign readiness. Send MarketingExtra those materials and we will review the tracking assumptions with you, identify gaps before activity begins, and agree what the first summary should answer.

How it works

  1. Choose the decisionWrite down what you need to decide and the user action that would support it. Avoid starting with whatever number is easiest to collect.
  2. Set definitionsAgree what counts as an active user, a holder observation and an acquired customer. Record the data source and time window for each.
  3. Tag campaign activityUse consistent links or referral labels and keep a dated record of campaign activity and relevant product changes.
  4. Review evidence togetherCompare campaign data with on-chain or product activity, retention and CAC. Separate observed changes from your interpretation of their cause.
  5. Choose the next testContinue, adjust or stop based on the evidence, and record what you will keep consistent so the next comparison remains useful.

Frequently asked questions

Are token holders the same as community members?

No. Holder counts represent addresses associated with token balances, not a verified count of people or active community members. One person may control several addresses, and some addresses may represent shared or project-related wallets. Use holder movement as one signal and compare it with product actions and community participation.

How do you tell if trading volume matters to a campaign?

Record the market source, pair and observation window, then review activity alongside liquidity and wallet patterns. Compare the same period before and after the campaign and note other events that could explain a change. This can show a relationship worth investigating, but timing alone does not establish that marketing caused it.

What is a good retention metric?

Choose a return action that reflects real product value. It could be a repeat product use, a completed transaction or another meaningful action, depending on the project. Define the action, cohort and observation window before comparing results; a social follow or wallet address alone may not show that someone returned.

How should a startup work out CAC?

Divide the acquisition spend included in your calculation by the number of customers attributed to that activity. Define “customer,” list included costs and state how you assign conversions to channels. Keep returning users distinct from first-time customers, and interpret CAC alongside whether the acquired cohort continues to use the product.

How often should the team review the numbers?

A weekly review is a practical rhythm for catching tracking gaps and noting campaign context while it is fresh. Use a longer observation window when the product's meaningful return action takes time. Keep the review cadence and definitions consistent so a change in reporting does not look like a change in performance.

Can a metric promise visibility on a market platform?

No. A project can document campaign activity and review what a market interface displays, but it cannot control that platform's review decisions, ranking or rotation. Metrics help your team assess evidence and choose its next action; they do not guarantee that a token will be featured or that market activity will follow.
